My Life as a Singing Son
by John Wilson

Hmm, where should I begin?! I started in the Florida's Singing Sons Boychoir when I was in fourth grade through an audition that was held at my elementary school. I was only eight years old then. It has been an amazing experience. I started in the Training Choir, made up of mostly eight and nine year olds, and was in that for a year. While in the training choir I started learning music theory with Ms. Peterson. Then I moved up to Junior Choir for a year with more theory and testing, and before I knew it, I was given the opportunity to join the Concert Choir. I will never forget that day... as I recall my dad cried!

The Concert Choir performed for the Marlins, Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, on aircraft carriers for astronauts, beautiful weddings, Christmas and Spring concerts, and we even did a pilot for Showtime called Dexter. As a Concert Choir member my music theory and testing continued, and before long I had, through a lot of hard work, earned the title of Full Chorister. This is roughly the equivalent of third year college knowledge of music theory.

One of the most exciting things about Concert Choir is touring. My first tour with the choir was to Southern France. We visited Marseille, Avignon, Carcassonne, and several other cities. There were enormous castles and huge cathedrals! The tour was amazing! My second tour was to California. We sang in a festival there, with many other choirs. Some men only, some girls only, and a couple mixed. We stayed in the San Francisco area, and went on many tours. The choir visited Alcatraz and Ghirardelli Square. Another great tour! The third tour that I have been on was to the Czech Republic. We stayed mostly in the area called Hradec Kralova, but we visited Prague, too. It is a beautiful country. We also sang in another festival here. My fourth and most recent tour was to Minnesota. We stayed at St. John's University, where we sang in the festival. The campus was really big, and beautiful. It is home to lots of monks, too.

Also, from the choir, I have had MANY opportunities opened to me. One is Amahl and the Night Visitors, that All Saints church did. The second, and really awesome one, is that I got to audition for the Florida Grand Operas' Magic Flute. I made it!!! We had lots of rehearsals, with lots of singing and moving. We also got to come on stage in a hot air balloon!!! That was soooo much fun!!!

I am now fourteen and my voice has changed from a first soprano in the training choir, to a first bass in the Second Generation Singers which is the group for changed voices.

I would recommend joining the Florida's Singing Sons Boychoir to any young boy! It has given me great knowledge, more happy times than I can count, confidence, and life long friends. I have had many great experiences from this, and I don't plan to stop now! Music is a great way of life!
